IMO Regulation Alert: PFOS-Based Firefighting Foams to Be Phased Out by 2026

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted new amendments under MSC.532(107) /20/Add.1, mandating the prohibition of fire-extinguishing media containing PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonic acid) — a known PFAS compound. This regulation applies to all ships, with compliance required no later than the first safety equipment survey on or after 1 January 2026.

Why does this matter?

PFOS is part of the broader PFAS chemical family — substances known for their extreme persistence in the environment and potential health hazards. The IMO’s new regulation marks a global move toward eliminating these harmful “forever chemicals” from maritime firefighting systems.
